Women in Leadership – Keys to Staying Ahead

Everyone wants to know how to get ahead and stay ahead. Part of it is in how you treat others and another part is in how you teach others to treat you. Yes, you read that right. women in leadership  We teach others how to treat us by our actions and reactions. Everything we do influences our environment and the people in it. We are not pawns at the mercy of other people. No leader I have ever known has gotten far if they did not take charge and make the effort to shape their career and their life.

Use your behaviors to influence your surroundings. Know yourself well and be intentional about how you show up in the world. Here are some key behaviors to help you do that.

Do not assume everyone sees the world like you do. Understand the concept of “The Map is Not the Territory” – everyone has a piece of the picture from their own vantage point but no one sees the whole thing including you. Listen and learn from everyone.

Do not get caught up in office drama. Stay as far away as possible, it only brings you down. If someone asks if they can close the door use that as a red flag and steer the conversation elsewhere. You need to be above that kind of behavior.

Show your respect. Everyone is a part of your organization and they all should be treated with respect. If you think it is OK to disrespect someone then other people will think it is OK to disrespect you. I do not think that is what you really want to happen.

Be a role model for others to follow. You especially owe this to other women. Things are not yet equal in the workplace and your success should be an open path for others to follow.
